With as cold as it's been this winter, these bags appear that they feel like the rest of us in Baltimore feel - cold and exposed. What a lovely day! This girl was found high up in the trees in the heart of Canton's remodeling district. Could she be a worker's lunch bag? Or a school child's gym clothes bag? I suppose we'll never really know. But what we do know is that this bag is an important contributor to the success and future of this fine neighborhood. And.... we're BACK! (How often have I said that?) I have a backlog of about ten BIT photos that I haven't posted but have in blogger drafts. Before Bags In Trees brings you images of Baltimore Bags in the Springtime, I am going to get back on track with these archived photos if that's okay with the BIT readers.

So to start us off we have twin bags in twin trees on Patterson Park Ave. Crisp and white, these bags couldn't have been here very long when I spotted them. Only about two or three blocks from their likely source - the Royal Farms on Fleet Street - they haven't had the proper tour around Charm City that many of our bags have apparently seen. If anyone can testify that these bags are still in this location, please let us know!

How dreary! This is not one of Charm City's finer days, but it's important to note that every day should be a bag-looking day. This little lady was found snapping and shifting in gusts of wind on a dark and wet day in Baltimore. I was probably a little wet and cold venturing out to take this photo, but even in her bleakness, this bag was worth capturing on film.

So what is the lesson, here? Sacrifices must be made for BIT. Period.

A recent drive around our grand city turned up many of the bags that were feared lost this summer. As expected, the lost leaves all over Baltimore are not only revealing some hidden treasures for BIT fans, but also creating quite the trap for many an airborne bag.

Today on BIT we have a two-for-one special. These bags were a bonus find in the heart of Canton. The bag above seems like a new neighbor on the block - it is billowing in the breeze and mostly in tact - whereas the bag below appears to be a long term resident. What a glorious visual paradox!

Once again, AG comes through with another dramatic snowy BIT image. The remnants of this bag were found outside of the Superfresh. I took this photo about two weeks ago, and MY GOODNESS has the weather changed quickly in that period of time! This beauty was snuggled so quietly in this tree that I almost missed it. This elegant bag was spotted downtown on Pratt Street, right in front of the Convention Center. It's not often that we find BIT smack in the middle of beautiful downtown Baltimore, so this was a real treat. And much like the Belvedere Bag, the Pratt Street Bag is well with reach of any BIT haters, but yet no one has disturbed it. It is respect like that which keeps us all a bit hopeful.

The staff here have BIT have noticed a progressive trend throughout the summer and fall here in Baltimore - far less bags in trees. Although saddening for us, we hope that the onset of colder weather and fallen leaves will expose some of Baltimore's hidden gems. This photo is a month or so old... notice the barren tree branches. What I love about this photo is the contrast of the bag against the branches and sky. The bag is catching some late afternoon sun as well, giving it a golden-orange glow as it is lifted by a breeze.

Safeway on Boston St is the source for many of Canton's bags in trees. I found this lovely bag during an evening walk, hidden carefully between leafed branches towards the back of the parking lot. Although I received a few odd glances from neighborhood dog walkers, mildly curious by what I found so interesting in a dark tree in the evening, this was undoubtedly a lucky find!

Despite recent weather patterns suggesting winter-like conditions (what did the groundhog predict?) spring is in full effect and technically has been for nearly a month now. Even if it's a bit blustery out, the branches (or respositories, as well like to call them) of our fair city's trees are beginning to show signs of spring. This Bolton Hill bloomer may be the last of a dying breed, meaning that as Charissa so deftly pointed out, that the objects of our affection will soon go into hiding. Perhaps it's good that they'll be hiding soon with all this anti-bag dribble littering the conversation.

The staff at Bags in Trees are rule followers. We like rules, standard operating procedures and clear outcomes. Typically, I would shrug off any attempt to distract us from our singular vision to bring you images of bags in trees, but today's bag was too beautiful to keep to ourselves. It is clearly not a bag in a tree, but rather a bag in a power line.

Because our subjects are the bags themselves, I feel that we have crossed into a gray area of sorts which allows me to share this find. For not only do I have a photo of this phenomenon, but also a video.

Likely due to an unappreciative neighbor (or BG&E), this bag is no longer available to be seen in person.

BIT for the record

BIT was recently asked to provide a statement by w/r/t a disturbing situation in San Francisco. A portion of that statement appears in a Baltimore Sun article today. For the sake of being complete, this is what we say officially, for the record, and all that:

"We don't condemn the use of alternative grocery recepticles per se. Rather, we are concerned with the preservation of naturally occurring phenomena in city tree branches most commonly associated with plastic grocery bags. In that light, the situation in San Francisco is certainly troubling as it threatens to make extinct the public (and very natural) art we promote at Bags In Trees. It's clear that news of this pre-emptive strike on bags in trees by a few San Francisco tree-hugging, bag-hating fanatics, points to an environmentalist agenda aimed at taking art away from decent people. And that's just not right."

However, the most disturbing thing from Mr. Kasper's article is the outing of himself as well as naming two other Baltimoreans who have apparently been brainwashed by the extremist ideology of the NYRP and have formed a sleeper cell in our own fair city, taking it upon themselves to use make shift bag snaggers to de-bag Baltimore's trees. Bag lovers unite!

Just down the street from the local grocery, I spotted one bag, then two, then three - in this high and lofty tree. I was surprised to see three white bags, since I know (as a local) that the grocery only dispenses brown and blue plastic bags.

"Where have these come from?" I queried silently. Perhaps an establishment on Canton Square? Or possibly a local eatery at the Can Company? It still remains a mystery.

Loitering outside of the Brewer's Hill Pub this day were two of our carefree friends. In the foreground is the more confident and lively subject, while in the background you can just make out the more timid of the two. This photo was taken in dearest Highlandtown, where bags seem to congregate and reproduce weekly. Although backlit by a dreary sky, she seems disinterested or even apathetic to her lackluster surroundings. She has chosen a solitary life, and we at BIT feel strongly that we must honor that choice.

While driving through one of my favorite fast food eateries, I spotted a bag perched in a sad looking little tree. As steady as she seemed to be, there were too many wires and cars nearby for me to feel optimistic about her longevity. Determined not to intervene with nature, I can only hold out hope for her safety.

Another beautiful example of this creature's survival, today's bag has seen some better days. Now only a memory of what she once was, she has likely persevered many rain, snow and wind storms... so many that they have left her somewhat tattered and weary. But how grateful we are for her steadfastness, so that we can bear witness to her pure resolution!

Our latest Guest BIT comes to us from the Natty Boh buildings in East Canton. The photographer has asked to remain mysteriously anonymous, but this is what he had to say about his lucky find:

"My company recently moved to the newly renovated Natty Boh Tower and I was shocked to have spotted a bag bird so early in our time here. It's only been about 5 months since we moved in, but already there appears to at least one bag bird nesting right in the middle of the campus by the visitor parking.

Man, you should have seen her flapping! Breathtaking and inspirational. Even better, she's still perched high and proud this morning. I've named her the Natty Bag Bird."

And we're back! The staff at BIT apologizes for our unplanned hiatus, but between new jobs, new travels and a broken down laptop... we were unable to keep to our goal of three bags per week.

There's nothing like the beauty of Baltimore's architecture. Well, nothing except the beauty of the city's native bird! This gorgeous bag (Latin: Bageotus Plasticus) was caught nesting in a tree on one of Canton's prettiest blocks. I kept my distance, so as not to disturb the creature in its natural environment, but I couldn't help but sneak a peak with this photo!

My breath was taken away when I saw this bag lit up in the sun. It was such a majestic sight! Although shredded considerably by wind and time, in my opinion this is one of the most beautiful bags I have seen to date. It will definitely be a BIT Hall of Fame contender.

BIT: Monday Op-Ed

Bag lovers and pro-wind activists, rejoice. We are witnessing a renaissance in the city. The leaves have turned, dried up, and gone. And what they've revealed is nothing short of spectacular. All over Mobtown, plastic fruit is in bloom, more so than I've seen in recent memory. It's a romantic time—one we should relish each and every day, for although the bags are now revealed in the trees' naked branches, we know that much sooner than we'd like to think, they will once again be concealed. I was fortunate to witness the genesis of one of the objects of our affection here on the streets and in the trees of Baltimore. As I was leaving my neighborhood, I happened to catch the image of a plastic turquoise bag as it danced through the air, nearly 10 feet off the ground. I followed it's trajectory until it landed effortlessly, coming to rest in warm embrace of a tree's fragile branches. It was a poignant moment that will remain with me through the winter months. Although the leaves are gone, the trees are giving birth. Savor it.

Homes in this neighborhood can brag about their gorgeous views of the water, and I've got to believe that this bag in particular can probably boast the same due to it's location. The Bolton/Robert set concludes with a double, which includes our usual blue and somewhat obscure black bag. These bags are located on the north side of Robert St, mirroring their two counterparts across the street. Take a stroll around Bolton Hill and ssee if you can spot the "four on the corner." And if they happened to have been blown away, pour some beer in their memory. (Hey, North Ave is right around the corner.)

Tucked tightly in the branches of this Honey Locust tree is today's bag. Although the branches appear harmless, they are actually covered in tiny thorns — thorns that are likely responsible for this bag's current location. A Native American legend says that the Thunder Spirit recognized his son by his ability to sit comfortably on locust branches, despite the thorns. Maybe our bags have the same hint of the supernatural?

What was especially enticing about this bag, its fullness and proximity to posh living notwithstanding, was its height off of the ground—or more like its closeness to the ground. While most bags soar high in the branches out of reach, you could reach up and touch this one. It is truly a bag for the people.

BIT Sunday Week-In-Review & Op-Ed

This week was something of a banner week for BIT, which made an appearance in the Windy City Times' World Wide Weird column under the headline "John Waters Isn't the Only Fucked Up Thing From Baltimore." Here's what "graysong" had to say about us:

The Internet is nothing if not a suppository, er, repository, for single-minded obsessions. Nowhere is this more apparent than that portion of the Internet known as the blogosphere. There, millions of bored teens and twenty-somethings with nothing of consequence to write about, write about nothing of consequence. Many of them restrain their inconsequential ramblings down to the narrowest of topics, like this blog about bags in trees—in Baltimore. Now that’s narrowcasting.

While we're pretty sure that the headline was supposed to make us feel bad, especially considering the dreary write-up, we're kind of proud of that. I mean, who wouldn't want to be compared to John Waters? Now I'm not sure what could of prompted graysong to lay his (or her) fist of fury upon us, but considering the WCT's readership, could it have been our stated hatred of The Divine Miss M? At any rate, Mr. graysong you are now on notice along with Ian Frazier, Australia, and all of the other bag-hating, anti-wind activists of the world.

In other news, BIT was honored this week with the distinction of the Homer Simpson Transmudanity Award, a prize bestowed by self-proclaimed pop culture junkie Matthew Caverhill on a blog deemed the "freakiest (in a good way)" thing he's seen in any given seven day period. The citation began with the following: "John Waters would probably love this week's winner." You see, those who know, know. Bask in the gloriousness this praise:

"[A]s a premise and in execution [BIT] is both so bizarre and yet lovingly crafted that I can't help but be impressed by the depth of this endeavor, especially since this blog has been in existence since March of this year. It is audacious and original."
